Time is flying by, and we are starting to plan ahead for voting and next year's nominees.

There will be a link to a form to submit votes from this site that goes live the last week in February 2012 and stays open through the first week in March.

We are also planning ahead and taking suggestions for next year's nominees.

One Copy Can Be Enough

You don't necessarily need multiple copies of each of the 15 books to have students participate in reading and voting.

In my library I only have one copy of each title. Since the majority of students who will be participating are in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, we are enjoying the titles as a whole classes.
Part of my reasoning for this is financial, but mostly I want all of my K-2 students to be able to participate in the voting in late February. Students only need to have read (or have read to them) 8 of the 15 titles to be able to vote.

I may buy a copy or two more of a few titles depending on the demand after we read them together. Even my Kindergartners know how to place holds - and when they like something they do!

Since for some of the books it will be a long time between the "read-together" and voting, I am trying to incorporate some ways for us to remember the books come voting time.

We recently read Rain School by James Rumford.
After we read the book together, I asked students what they liked about the story, or what they will remember and then recorded their answers.

Here is what they said:

This is a work in progress, and I would love to add any ideas you may have. Click on the discussion tab on any of the book pages to add comments or ideas for that book.

There is a permanent link to this wiki from the menu at the top of this blog.

Giveaway to Celebrate the 15 Books Award

Now that all 15 nominees have been revealed, it is time to celebrate and give away a few books.

In an attempt to not show favoritism, the nominees were revealed in alphabetical order by title, and I used the book descriptions from their publishers.

However there are three books on the list that are special.
This award is hosted by me in Minnesota, and three nominees have a Minnesota connection.

I have 1 AUTOGRAPHED copy of each of the nominees with a "Minnesota Connection" to giveaway!
(Information on how to enter the giveaway is at the bottom of this post.)

Mali Under the Night Sky is the true story of Lao-American artist Malichansouk Kouanchao (http://djai.net/mali) based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who walked with her family from Laos to Thailand when she was five years old. Due to wars that were not contained by borders, she and her family had to leave their home to be safe. She remembers the journey, as well as the beauty and strength of Lao culture. Mali draws upon those memories when faced with the challenges of loss.

Oscar and the Very Hungry Dragon

Oscar's mom wept bitterly - what mother wouldn't? But she should have known Oscar was far too clever to get eaten by an old dragon!

My Abuelita

Illustrated by Yuyi Morales

Abuelita’s hair is the color of salt. Her face is as crinkled as a dried chile. She booms out words as wild as blossoms blooming. Her grandson knows he has the most amazing grandmother ever—with a very important job. What could Abuelita's job be?

Sprinkled with Spanish and infused with love, My Abuelita is a glorious celebration of family, imagination, and the power of story.

"[W]hat I love about children’s books is that we’re never supposed to have just one book. We’re not supposed to have just one story. [...]for me, the world of stories is aware that we are enriched by diversity, and that we benefit from more stories. The more stories the better, the more voices, the more ears, the better."
