Nominee #8: Mali Under the Night Sky by Youme

Mali Under the Night Sky: a Lao Story of Home
by Youme

Mali Under the Night Sky is the true story of Lao-American artist Malichansouk Kouanchao, who walked with her family from Laos to Thailand when she was five years old. Due to wars that were not contained by borders, she and her family had to leave their home to be safe. She remembers the journey, as well as the beauty and strength of Lao culture. Mali draws upon those memories when faced with the challenges of loss.

Malichansouk Kouanchao is an artist and web designer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her multidisciplinary works explore the relationship between art, transformation, and communal healing.

"[W]hat I love about children’s books is that we’re never supposed to have just one book. We’re not supposed to have just one story. [...]for me, the world of stories is aware that we are enriched by diversity, and that we benefit from more stories. The more stories the better, the more voices, the more ears, the better."
-Youme Landowne from an interview with J.L. Powers
